From skydive to games room: Callands Care Home opens new space for residents

A fundraising skydive by Callands Care Home colleague Kyle Ward has helped create a new gaming and entertainment space for residents in Warrington.

There’s nothing quite like seeing an idea come to life especially when you know the people who inspired it are going to really enjoy it...

Residents at Callands Care Home in Warrington have a brand-new space to play games, spend time together and have some fun, following the opening of The Corner Gaming HQ.

The new games room was created for residents at Callands’ Lakeside community, following an idea from the team and fundraising by colleague Kyle Ward, who took on a skydive to help raise money for the project. Kyle completed his skydive last month and has raised more than £700. Now, the room is open and residents have already been making the most of it!

The new space officially opened this week, with residents spending the day exploring the room, trying out the equipment, playing games and enjoying it together. For the Callands team, it’s been lovely to see residents getting stuck in and making the space their own.

Kyle said: “From completing my skydive and raising funds to turning an idea into reality, the journey to creating our very own games room has been incredibly rewarding. Last month, I completed my skydive as part of my fundraising efforts, with the goal of creating a dedicated gaming and entertainment space for our residents. What started as an idea has now become a reality, and we are absolutely delighted with the outcome. Seeing the smiles on residents’ faces and watching them enjoy a space that was created specifically for them makes all the hard work, fundraising and planning completely worthwhile.”

A space for residents to enjoy

At Callands Care Home, activities are a big part of everyday life. The team takes time to understand residents’ interests, hobbies and personalities, finding different ways for people to spend their time and enjoy being together.

The Corner Gaming HQ gives residents another space to do just that. Some might enjoy playing games, others might simply want to sit with friends, try something new or watch the action. The important thing is that the room gives residents another choice and another place to spend time doing something they enjoy.

Cheryl Byrne, Home Manager at Callands, said: “It’s brilliant to finally see The Corner Gaming HQ open! The residents have already been playing games, trying everything out and having a great time. Kyle’s skydive helped make this happen, so seeing him come back and see the room being enjoyed by the residents he raised the money for is really special. We’re so proud of him and can’t wait to see what the residents get up to in here!”

Kyle’s fundraising has helped bring the idea to life, and the best part has been seeing residents actually using and enjoying the space.

The room is already getting plenty of use, with residents trying out the games, having a laugh and spending time together.
