Cedar Garden care home in Preston, a specialist male only dementia nursing home supporting residents with complex needs, recently held a military ball for the gentlemen living at Cedar Garden. The idea came from the home’s work towards the nationally recognised Veteran Friendly Framework accreditation, which encourages services to better understand and support veterans.

While exploring the accreditation, Home Manager Emma Anforth and her team discovered that six residents at Cedar Garden had served in the military. As the team spent time learning more about their background, they found that many of the residents once enjoyed dancing and social evenings as a way to relax. This sparked the idea to host a military ball that would bring back memories of their younger years and create a meaningful experience tailored to their interests.

The team worked together to plan a nostalgic day filled with vintage touches. Residents dressed in suits that were kindly donated by staff, families and members of the local Facebook community after Emma posted an appeal just a few weeks earlier. Staff of Cedar Garden even came in on their days off wearing 1940’s outfits, and families joined in to help make the event feel even more special. Around the home, themed areas were set up so every gentleman could enjoy the day in a way that suited them – from vintage cars parked outside to model aeroplanes, maps and a memory corner with memorabilia and rank badges, and quieter spaces for those who prefer a space to relax and reflect. Classic 1940’s music played throughout the afternoon, helping residents reminisce and reconnect with familiar moments from the past.

The event was made even more special by the support of staff, families and the local community, whose generosity helped create a warm and joyful atmosphere. The military ball brought laughter and created new memories for the residents and staff, celebrating both the history of the residents and the strong sense of community at Cedar Garden.

It was a day filled with treasured memories and moments of reflection. What made the day even more special was seeing our staff and the local community come together to make it happen. Their support, dedication and generosity helped create a truly memorable occasion, filled with smiles, laughter and meaningful moments that will be remembered for years to come.”

Cedar Garden continues to work towards its veteran friendly accreditation and will soon join ten other Dovehaven homes that are already proudly recognised for their commitment to supporting veterans.
