Person-Centred Leadership in Care: A Shared Direction for Dovehaven

At Dovehaven, we believe the quality of care people receive is shaped by how our people feel at work.

That is why we brought leaders from across our homes together for a dedicated Leadership Day in the North West, focused on one clear priority: person-centred leadership in action. This was not about introducing a new idea. It was about strengthening something we already know to be true, that when people feel valued, supported and understood, they are far more likely to stay, to grow, and to deliver outstanding care.

Leading with people in mind

Person-centred care sits at the heart of everything we do. Person-centred leadership builds on that. It asks us to lead with curiosity. To take time to understand what matters to each individual. To recognise that every colleague brings different strengths, motivations and experiences.

In a busy care environment, it can be easy to focus on tasks and time pressures, but the strongest teams are built when leaders create space for connection, trust and belonging. That is what person-centred leadership looks like in practice.

Bringing the message to life

We were joined by motivational speaker Big Ian, whose session grounded the day in a simple but powerful reminder: you matter.

It was a message that resonated across the room. Through real-life examples and insight into dementia care, Ian challenged us to see beyond behaviours and understand the person behind them, whether that is a resident or a colleague.

One Dovehaven employee described Ian's session as 'a real eye opener and genuinely inspiring,' and that sentiment was reflected across the whole team.

Connecting culture with consistency

Alongside this, our teams were introduced to Boost’s policy platform, helping us strengthen the link between culture and consistency.

Clear frameworks matter. They provide confidence, clarity and fairness, but they are most effective when they sit alongside strong, values-led leadership. For us, this is about balance. Supporting our teams with the right tools, while also trusting them to lead with compassion, judgement and professionalism.

What we heard from our leaders

The feedback from the day was both encouraging and honest. Leaders told us they are leaving with a renewed focus on:

  • getting to know their teams as individuals
  • listening more and acting on what they hear
  • making time for meaningful conversations
  • leading in a more person-centred way, every day

There was also something powerful in simply coming together. Being in the same room created a sense of shared purpose and it reminded us that while each home is unique, we are all working towards the same goal in creating environments where people feel they belong.

Why this matters for care in the North West

Across the North West care sector, retention and workforce wellbeing remain key challenges. What this day reinforced is that leadership plays a critical role in addressing both.

People are more likely to stay where they feel:

  • respected and treated fairly
  • supported through challenges
  • recognised for the work they do
  • part of a strong, connected team

These aren't abstract ideas, they are shaped in everyday moments like conversations, decisions, and in how leaders show up.

A shared commitment moving forward

This day wasn’t about ticking a box or hosting an event, it was about coming back to what really matters. Person-centred leadership isn’t something separate from the day job, it's how we welcome someone on their first day, how we check in when things feel tough, how we listen, and how we notice the effort people put in. Taking that accountability and ownership of the experience we create for our teams, and making small, consistent changes that make a real difference.

Across Dovehaven, we see that leadership in action every day. This was simply a chance to pause, reflect and refocus on the difference it makes. When people feel safe, valued and understood, everything changes. Teams feel stronger, care feels more personal. and people are far more likely to stay and grow with us.

That’s what we’re building here at Dovehaven, together. If that sounds like somewhere you’d like to be, you can learn more about a career at Dovehaven here.
