People living with complex care needs in Preston and the surrounding area now have access to a new specialist service following the official opening of Rowan Unit at Dovehaven Lodge.
The purpose-built 18-bed unit has been developed to support adults with complex needs, including acquired and traumatic brain injuries, neurological conditions, enduring mental health conditions and behavioural support needs. The opening marks an important investment in specialist care provision within the city, helping more people access the tailored support they need closer to home.
To celebrate the opening, Dovehaven welcomed healthcare professionals, community partners, prospective residents and their families, colleagues and local dignitaries to an open day showcasing the newly transformed environment and the specialist care available within the service.
The unit was officially opened by the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nweeda Khan, who cut the ribbon and toured the facility alongside guests. During her visit, the Mayor praised Rowan Unit as a much-needed resource for the local community and recognised the positive impact the service will have for individuals and families requiring specialist support.
Visitors were given the opportunity to explore the unit, meet the team and learn more about Dovehaven's person-centred approach to supporting people with highly complex needs. Guests also enjoyed a fish and chip lunch kindly provided by Apetito, helping to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.
Located within Dovehaven Lodge, Rowan Unit further strengthens the home's diverse care offering. Dovehaven Lodge already provides a range of specialist services including nursing care, residential dementia care, dementia nursing care, male-only specialist dementia care, advanced nursing support, respite care, PEG feeding, palliative care and end-of-life care.
The addition of Rowan Unit reflects a growing need for specialist complex care services across Lancashire, particularly for individuals whose needs require a combination of clinical expertise, behavioural support and compassionate, relationship-led care.
Jenny Davies, Chief Executive Officer at Dovehaven, said:
"The opening of Rowan Unit represents a significant milestone for Dovehaven and, more importantly, for the people and families who need access to specialist complex care. Behind every referral is a person with their own story, experiences and aspirations, and our goal is to provide care that recognises the individual as well as their needs. We are incredibly proud of the environment our team has created and the expertise that sits behind it. Rowan Unit will provide specialist support for people with some of the most complex care requirements, while remaining a place that feels safe, welcoming and truly homely. We are excited to begin welcoming residents and supporting them to live fulfilling lives."
The opening of Rowan Unit reflects Dovehaven's ongoing commitment to investing in high-quality, specialist services that meet the evolving needs of local communities. Guided by its values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect Diversity, Excellence and Strength in Unity, Dovehaven continues to develop care environments where people can thrive, feel valued and receive the support that is right for them.
