Callands Care Home, a leading Warrington care home, has unveiled a newly transformed garden room within its Coniston Unit, which provides specialist Warrington complex care. The team celebrated the opening of the new space on Friday 1st May, marking another step forward in enhancing wellbeing, independence and everyday life for residents.

Coniston Unit, led by Complex Care Manager Samantha Cooper, supports men with complex needs and is recognised for its specialist Warrington complex care provision. The new garden room reflects the team’s continued commitment to creating person-centred environments that promote dignity, choice and quality of life.

What makes the project especially meaningful is the level of resident involvement from the very beginning. Prior to the work starting, the men on Coniston came together to discuss their ideas for the space and create a mood board outlining everything they wanted to include. Their input helped shape the project from concept to completion, ensuring the finished room truly reflects their preferences and interests.

Individual roles were also assigned to residents based on their previous job roles and life skills, including project manager, chief gardener and financial manager. This gave residents a genuine sense of ownership and purpose, while helping them stay closely involved in the planning, ordering and purchasing needed to bring the space to life.

The project also received a generous donation of plants from B&Q, helping to create a welcoming, calming and natural environment for residents to enjoy.

The garden room has been carefully repurposed and redecorated to create a warm, homely and therapeutic setting. Designed to support both emotional and physical wellbeing, the space offers residents a calm environment for relaxation, socialising, one-to-one support sessions and meaningful activities.

With natural light, soft furnishings and easy access to outdoor space, the room creates a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, helping to support mood, stimulation and tranquillity. It gives residents greater choice and flexibility throughout the day, while offering a space that can be adapted to a range of needs and preferences.

This is a strong example of how a Warrington care home can go beyond traditional care provision. By working alongside residents and involving them at every stage, the Coniston team has created an environment that feels inclusive, safe and truly homely.

Samantha Cooper, Complex Care Manager at Coniston Unit, said:
‘As an experienced Registered Mental Health Nurse with many years of experience in adult social care, I am passionate about ensuring our residents feel included and in control of their own lives as much as possible. We have a fantastic team on Coniston Unit who are committed to ensuring residents live their best possible life. This new garden room, championed by Chloe, has created a calm and therapeutic space where residents can relax or take part in gardening activities. It offers an important balance of stimulation and tranquillity, catering to a wide range of needs.’

Chloe Sturgess, Activities Coordinator at Coniston Unit, played a key role in championing the project and bringing the residents’ ideas to life. Her creativity and commitment to meaningful engagement helped shape a space that will continue to support wellbeing for months and years to come.

One of the residents, Brian, told us: 'The garden is room is a place of peace, calm and quiet for me. Chloe does amazing things in the home, and the garden room is one of them. I am in charge of watering the plants and I am looking forward to spending more time in there.'

The project is another example of how Callands Care Home continues to strengthen its specialist Warrington complex care offer, investing not only in high-quality support, but in environments that help people feel valued, involved and at home.
