Welcome to Birch Abbey

Birch Abbey is situated on Alexander Road, a quiet residential street in Southport. We provide the very best of residential and nursing care for 60 residents living with dementia.

The home is a thoughtfully designed and purpose built, arranged over 4 floors. Well established in the local area, our reputation for the excellent standard of our dementia care brings many new residents from our local community and beyond.

Our home has large communal spaced on the ground floor and lounges and dedicated dining rooms for each floor of the home. With access to the patio, our bar is well used for social occasions and family visits, the library is a quieter area and the small tv lounge is decorated just as it would be at home. Our cafe is set up as expected but, with the addition of a comfy sofa, is an extension of our dining room which overlooks the front of the building.

All bedrooms are large, ensuite and beautifully decorated. We very much encourage our residents to personalise their own bedrooms, bringing items and belongings, to ensure that their rooms feel 'just like home'.

The gardens are a real feature, hidden away at the back of the home there are large, well maintained gardens which area accessible for all.

Friends and family are welcome to visit at any time. We also have a specially constructed 'visitor pod' so that we are able to facilitate safe family visiting, whatever the current guidelines may be.

The health, well-being and happiness of our ‘family’ of residents, is always our number one priority. We provide care which ensures that residents feel as if they are in their own home. Familiar faces and familiar routine are key to this.

Offering both dementia residential and nursing care enables us to care for residents however their health and wellbeing might change.

All of our residents enjoy their own care plan, tailored specifically for them. This allows us to build their care around their health, preferences, lifestyles and routines. Everything we do is driven by this genuinely caring person centred approach, working together with friends and family to ensure the care experience is as expected and most importantly, helping residents stay healthy and safe.

Person centred care begins when a resident comes to us and we speak to them about their memories, background and their families. The information we gather is recorded within digital care plans. This ensure that our staff can spend more time with residents and less time completing paperwork.

Care can be provided on a one to one basis for those who require that extra personal support. The team members who deliver such care become to understand that residents needs and wishes very well.

The respite care we provide is ideal for those looking for extra care and support in a relaxing and homely environment - whether its following a recent illness, or to have a 'holiday stay' while a carer has a break. If you are considering a respite stay for someone you care for, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Our residents enjoy their lifelong interests and day to day fun activities. Reminiscence therapy is often based around personal photos. Whether it be photos of old Southport or well-known film stars, we have various items in the home which we are able to utilise in our conversations.

Activities follow a theme incorporating seasonal celebrations and special events such as birthdays when our chef always bakes a birthday cake! We encourage our residents to stay active and chair exercises are always great fun and very popular. Music is always playing in our home!

All Dovehaven care homes use 'Oomph! On Demand' to support resident exercise, hobbies and personal interests.

The daily menu offers a variety of delicious, home cooked, dishes at each mealtime. From breakfast and lunch to afternoon tea and dinner, our experienced chef ensures the menu is varied, seasonal and reflects residents preferences at all times.

Of course, there is a choice of refreshments available to residents, at all times. It is widely understood that it is as important for our residents who require dementia care, to drink enough fluid as well as to eat well.

What people say

I am extremely satisfied with the overall decision I made to place my 90-year-old mother at Birch Abbey.
My number 1 priority was safety and that requisite has exceeded my expectations. The staff are excellent and we have a good relationship with them.

T H (Son of Resident)

My wife has been in Birch Abbey 2 yrs and 3 months. The manager and staff have been excellent.

B P (Husband of Resident)

I am extremely happy with the care my mother receives at Birch Abbey. The caregivers are thoughtful, kind and supportive with my mum and our family. When mum came to Birch Abbey, she didn’t want to be in a care home, so she was angry and argumentative with the staff. Now, mum is happy, calm and loving towards the staff and us. I would like to thank all the staff at Birch Abbey.

Rita J (Daughter of Resident)

Our mum chose well! My first visit was welcoming, warm and sincere. Staff are caring, patient, kind, they tick all the boxes!

S C (Daughter of Resident)

My husband’s social worker wanted me to visit you and my first impression was very good! I was so pleased for him to move there! Everyone has been so kind to our family and I feel at peace that he is being well looked after and he is happy. I know he is! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

S C (Wife of Resident)
